Kaunas

Kaunas is the second largest city in Lithuania and is located about 100 km west of Vilnius, the country's capital. If you love relaxing in excellent hotels, emptying your wallet in the shopping streets, strolling through a cobblestone mediaeval city centre and admiring beautifully restored baroque buildings, then you should definitely check out Kaunas, where you can spend a pleasant stay practically all year round. Kaunas is much quieter than Vilnius, but as a student city it's by no means a sleepy town. The city centre is located between the Neris and the Nemunas, two rivers that flow into the Baltic Sea.

The citizens of Kaunas are used to tourists and are friendly towards strangers. Most of them speak English quite well, which is unusual for an Eastern European country. Kaunas is easy to reach by bus or train from Vilnius and also has an airport.

The Žalgirio Arena, where the competitions are held, is the largest indoor sports arena in the Baltics, a modern glass and steel structure located just outside the city centre. Once a year, in November, it's transformed into a paradise for women: 'Moters Pasaulis', the annual beauty fair.

 Travel tip

If you like to see bizarre things, you should visit the Devil Museum at 64 V. Putvinskio Street, which is probably the only museum in the world to display hundreds of devils in all shapes and sizes from all over the world!
