Once a city that counted more churches than clubs and restaurants, but nowadays the capital of Lithuania is a modern European city with a business centre full of skycrapers on one side of the river "Neris"and on the other side the beautifully renovated, historic old town.
To my opinion, Vilnius is one of the most pleasant cities in the world. When arriving at Vilnius airport, advertising on billboards shout: "Recharge in Vilnius" and that's exactly what I feel when taking the bus to the city centre. It has a laid back atmosphere, even in winter. Bustling but never too crowded. The city centre is compact but not as small that you've seen it all in one day.
A few low-cost airlines like Wizzair and Air Baltic fly to Vilnius from many parts in Europe. Car rental is cheap, main roads are in good condition and driving is safe and comfortable. Explore other places like Kaunas and the coast of the Baltic Sea as well which are just a few hours away from Vilnius.
I can recommend Vilnius as a city trip for those who are tired of these overcrowded West European cities. Instead, recharge in a (still) cheap place like Vilnius, and please, do not only come there to get drunk..
