The 'Ural beauty - long braid' competition, or in Russian: 'Уральская краса - длинная коса' is an annual long hair show held in shopping mall Alatir, Ekaterinburg on 12 June, the Day of Russia. An excellent day to show the world that wearing long hair is still Russia's symbol of feminine beauty despite the more comfortable short hair styles.
In the fourth edition of this popular and traditional event, 39 girls and women aged from 5 to 51 living in Ekaterinburg and surrounding cities participated and were selected from a large number of people who signed up for the preselection in May.
This show had the pretention to be a fashion show rather than a long hair contest. They cancelled the sporting element and instead impressed the attendance with an exhibition of traditional costumes mixed with "normal" models presenting latest summer fashion. As you can see from the photos, all contestants presented themselves in fabulous knee and floor length kimono's with flower prints. And after they had disappeared for a while into the dressing rooms they returned, wearing stunning traditional sarafans and kokoshniks, a typical Russian crown-like headdress. The girls showed their clothing while they were singing and others presented home made bakeries to the jury that resulted in a table full of delicious looking food.

Full hair lengths, from 65 to 135 cm, were finally revealed during the last part of the show. Like last year, participants wore dresses in the colors of the Russian flag: white, blue and red.
The organization must have a lot of fantasy to come up with another hairy Russian record. This year's record: to make as many braids as possible within half an hour at one place. I doubt the fact that this was ever done before, which should make it a lot easier to succeed. In the end, 95 girls where wearing not less than 779 braids, so another record can be subscribed in the Russian book of Records!
