Уральская краса - длинная коса / Ural Beauty - Long Braid 2013The 'Ural beauty - long braid' competition, or in Russian: 'Уральская краса - длинная коса' is an annual long hair show held in shopping mall Alatir, Ekaterinburg on 12 June, the Day of Russia. An excellent day to show the world that wearing long hair is still Russia's symbol of feminine beauty despite the more comfortable short hair styles.

In the fourth edition of this popular and traditional event, 39 girls and women aged from 5 to 51 living in Ekaterinburg and surrounding cities participated and were selected from a large number of people who signed up for the preselection in May.

This show had the pretention to be a fashion show rather than a long hair contest. They cancelled the sporting element and instead impressed the attendance with an exhibition of traditional costumes mixed with "normal" models presenting latest summer fashion. As you can see from the photos, all contestants presented themselves in fabulous knee and floor length kimono's with flower prints. And after they had disappeared for a while into the dressing rooms they returned, wearing stunning traditional sarafans and kokoshniks, a typical Russian crown-like headdress. The girls showed their clothing while they were singing and others presented home made bakeries to the jury that resulted in a table full of delicious looking food.

Ilgaplaukės 2013With the Ilgaplaukės contest of 2012 in mind, I went to Vilnius with little expectations. I entered the 5th floor of the VCUP shopping mall located on the bank of the river 'Neris' with the fear that, because of my quite critical review of last year, I would immidiately be kicked out by the security and spend five days in this cold time of year in Lithuania doing nothing. But luckily that didn't happen, and I was happily surprised about the location and the large number of contestants with a total hair length of 44,68 meters!

For the third time, this Ilgaplaukės contest that simply means "long haired" was organized by modelling agency 'Modeliai.lt' and was sponsored by the shopping mall VCUP. The aim of this contest is like each Lithuanian contest: showing that long hair is the result of patience, discipline and compassionate care and helps maintaining the Slavic tradition of having long hair. Unlike Ilgakasė contests in little villages in Lithuania that are also talent shows, the only thing that matters was hair length...

Warkocz Magdaleny 2012Warkocz Magdaleny is an annual festival organized at the end of July in the courtyard of a Jesuit church. It is located in the centre of Poznań, a nice tourist friendly town in the western part of Poland.

The last two years, Ywona Pufahl won the contest in the age category of 15 to 100 years old, but she was this year in hair length beaten by Alicja Malewska, a 33 year old woman with a braid measuring an unbelievable 166cm! As a trophy she received a massive wooden comb that she can hang above the fireplace and proudly look at it everyday. Alicja Melewska, who teaches English, lives in the Eastern side of Poland far away from this contest. But when she accidentally saw the announcement of this festival while visiting Poznań she realised that she might have a chance to win, so she decided to take part in the contest.

Like each year, the two party tents used for the combing, braided and measuring activities were way too small for the participants, their family, the hairdressers, photographers and all other attendance, especially when it started to rain and everyone on the courtyard used the tents as a shelter. So we stood there shoulder to shoulder as if we were waiting for the bus to appear. This might be a point of improvement for next year.

Ural Beauty - Long Braid 2012The 'Ural Beauty - Long Braid' competition, or in Russian: 'Уральская краса - длинная коса' is an annual long hair show held in Ekaterinburg on the Day of Russia (12 June) in one of the large shopping malls. An excellent day to show the world that wearing long hair is still Russia's symbol of feminine beauty!

Although this is only the third Ekaterinburg's contest in row, this famous show might already be considered as the most prominent long hair contest in Russia and beyond! A competition that is unique in its kind. The overall set up was smaller and more modest than previous years, but it was simply the most impressive and enchanting long hair contest in recent Russian history!

'Ilgakasė Elektrenai 2012Ilgakasė' is the title of long hair contests that are frequently held in different villages in Lithuania. This annual contest is in Elektrenai, a little village between the capital Vilnius and Kaunas, the second city of Lithuania

The 8th annual Ilgakasė competition in Elektrenai was held traditionally in the cultural centre of the town where 10 girls and a boy in the age of 5 - 16 participated. The program was pretty much the same as last year with hair measuring, showing hobbies like dancing, playing an instrument and crafts making and of course the part where they could show off there fabulous hairstyles and clothing.

The time between the acts was filled with a Moulin Rouge-like group called 'ŠarkA' who sang popular Lithuanian songs during the time between the acts and while the jury was having trouble deciding who would be the winner. Prizes were given to the participant with the most beautiful hair, most photogenic, longest hair and overall appearance. For names of winners, I refer to this Lithuanian article.
